Summary
Introduction. Air-polishing is vital complement of supragingival scaling performed in order to remove extrinsic discolorations and soft non-mineralised deposits. Slurry of pressurized air, powder and water generated by air-polishing device allows for satisfactory results with shorter time and less operator fatigue when compared to traditional instrumentation.
Aim. Clinical study was conducted to assess efficiency and comfort of two types of MonoFlow sodium bicarbonate based air-polishing powders: “Soft” (40-45 μm) and “Standard” (60-65 μm).
Material and methods. A group of 100 patients diagnosed with either gingivitis or periodontitis was treated with SRP followed by air-polishing. “Soft” version of air-polishing powder was used in the right side of each dental arch, while “Standard” powder was used in the left side. Stain removal abilities, treatment duration, patients comfort, type of preferred flavor and convenience of application by operator were evaluated subsequently.
Results. “Soft” version was the most preferred powder among patients due to lesser discomfort during air-polishing. This opinion was independent of diagnosis and the highest ranked flavor was lemon. According to operators perception – “Soft” powder was the most effective and convenient to use in patients with both gingivitis and periodontitis. Smoking, coffee consumption and age were not factors related to this rating. No significant differences were found in treatment duration between compared products.
Conclusions. Fine grit powder was ranked higher than coarse grit powder in terms of comfort and efficiency by both patients and operators. Air-polishing with use of 40-45 μm sodium bicarbonate powder such as MonoFlow “Soft” seems to be effective and rational clinical approach. Patient preferences must be considered while using flavored powders.
