Summary
The article presents the work and life of Sir William Ernest Miles, an English surgeon, who devised the first radical procedure for cancer of the rectum, called his name as the Miles operation. Miles lived and worked in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century in London, where he learned the profession from eminent surgeons of the period: Harrison Cripps and David Goodsall. He also worked as a demonstrator of the anatomy at St. Bartholomew Hospital, which undoubtedly had an impact on the observations made by him. Taking part in the autopsies of patients who died of rectal cancer, he observed that the metastatics spread from the original site in three directions. Miles subsequently proposed a radical operation to remove the rectal cancer and its lymphatic drainage. He emphasized the importance of the abdominal phase of the operation, through which it was possible to control the zones of the lymphatic spread. Miles was a member of many scientific societies and the author of the textbook of surgery of anus and rectum. Miles was recognized as a respected teacher, brilliant and skilled surgeon. His fame attracted many surgeons to watch him at work. Privately he was a joyful man, loving sports and loved by friends.
