Summary
Introduction. Crohn’s disease is nonspecific inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which is characterized by segmental inflammation. It fluctuates between periods of remission and relapse. This chronic disease is a serious problem not only for patients themselves but also for their immediate surroundings. In order to properly treat this disease, it is not sufficient to alleviate the symptoms but also to improve the patient’s quality of life.
Aim. The aim of this study was to assess the quality of life in patients with Crohn’s disease in remission and exacerbation stages, identify predictors of quality of life in patients with Crohn’s disease.
Material and methods. Sixty patients diagnosed with Crohn’s disease took part in the study. The study took place between 1 January and 31 May 2011. The quality of life was assessed by means of the questionnaire designed based on existing measures: Short Form 36 (SF-36) and Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire (IBDQ).
Results. Patients in a remission stage had higher quality of life than patients during relapse. The intensity and frequency of the symptoms (abdominal pain and diarrhoea) were the strongest predictors of the quality of life in patients with Crohn’s disease.
Conclusions. It is essential to identify factors which have an impact on the quality of life among patients with Crohn’s disease. Such knowledge will help improve their quality of life and provide them with an opportunity for normal functioning.
