Poziom lęku u dzieci przed zabiegiem operacyjnym

Summary
Introduction. Every illness as well as every stay at the hospital are difficult for the human mechanisms which control the condition of the mind. Moreover, they are also the source of the psychological stress. On the other hand, every medical action is seen as an interference into the personal integrity of a patient. The lack of self-reliance, being dependent on unknown people and the change of the surrounding can cause the feeling of being in danger and losing the sense of security. The fear which is observed during a surgery is connected with the extend of a surgery, the sex of a patient and their age.
Aim. The respondents were asked to evaluate the level of fear with respect to the surgery planned. They were supposed to compare their present state of being to the previous one which they were satisfied with.
Material and methods. In the following thesis the original survey was used. The survey concerned with the estimation of the fear level was being carried out from September to December 2014. The study was referred to the group of children who were hospitalized in The Centre of Pediatrics and Oncology in Chorzów in a Surgery Ward with the Centre of Minimally Invasive Surgery as well as to the patients of The Pediatric Orthopedic and Traumatology Ward. The aim of the stay at the hospital was the planned surgery.
Results. The most numerous group of the respondents were girls aged mainly between 11 and 17 years old. What is more, the same can be observed with respect to boys whose the most numerous group were also the boys between 11 and 17 years old. The biggest group of respondents pointed out that the feeling of anxiety, nervousness and the psychological tension before a surgery were tolerable. Moreover, the concerns about what may happen during a surgery were estimated as tolerable by the majority of respondents.
Conclusions: It appears that the level of fear felt by patients of The Centre of Pediatrics and Oncology in Chorzów staying in Surgery Ward with the Centre of Minimally Invasive Surgery as well as the patients of The Pediatric Orthopedic and Traumatology Ward is tolerable. The influence on the following results had the presence of the patients’ parents before a surgery as well as the doctor’s and nurses’ help during the stay in a hospital ward. What is more, the high level of trust towards the healthcare professionals who were taking care of the patients during their stay at the hospital influenced the following results.
