Summary
Free radicals and other reactive oxygen species possess harmful effects on our body condition. In recent years, the number of research papers concerning berries and its health activities has increased rapidly. Berries are consumed as fruits, wine, juice and jams and also are present in other food products. Bioactive extracts and other products from bilberry, grape and pomegranate became important ingredients in functional food and food supplements. Vaccinium myrtillus L., Vitis vinifera L. or Punica granatum L. contain a lot of biological active constituents, especially natural antioxidants responsible for their antioxidant properties extremely important for human health. Antioxidant activities of berries phenolic compounds based on inhibition of lipid peroxidation and free radical scavenging have been extensively investigated in vitro and in vivo.
