Summary
Plants and compounds isolated from them play a significant role in human health. More and more people rely on medicines and healthcare products of natural origin. Alkylphenols is a massive group of biological active compounds. Their structure, pharmacological activity and metabolism have been intensively studied by many researchers. There are derivatives of simple phenols and phenolic acids with n-alkyl or n-alkenyl side chains long up to 29 carbon atoms within this group. Authors focus on plant alkylresorcinols (AR) which seems to be the most prospectus subgroup of alkylphenols. AR homologues are mainly found in the outer parts of cereals but the variation in content is big within and between plant species. AR are absorbed and transported in lipoprotein fractions and in erythrocyte membranes. They can also be distributed and stored in tissues, e.g. adipose tissue. Due to their biological activity such as antibacterial, anthelmintic, cytostatic and ability to incorporate into biological membranes, they constitute a great possibility of use in prevention and therapy.
