Summary
In the present study, Cinnamon oil (Oleum Cinnamomi) was investigated for activity against 59 strains yeastlike fungi isolated from patients with candidosis oral cavity, and 7 reference strains. The susceptibility of Candida strains was determined by means plate dilution technique in Sabouraud’s agar. The inoculum containing 105 CFU per spot was seeded with Steers replicator upon the surface of agar with and without Cinnamon oil (strains growth control). Incubation the agar plates was performed in aerobic conditions in 37°C for 24 h. The MIC was defined as the lowest concentrations of the Cinnamon oil that completely inhibited growth of tested strains. The results showed that the most susceptible to oil were strains yeastlike fungi from the species of Candida glabrata, C. guilliermondii and C. utilis. The growth of all tested strains was inhibited by concentrations of ≤ 0.06 to 0.25 mg/ml. The strains from species of C. lusitaniae, C. parapsilosis and C. tropicalis were slightly less susceptible to the oil (MIC 0.12-0.5 mg/ml). The Cinnamon oil was highly active vs. all tested Candida strains.
