Summary
Propolis is a substance produced by honey bees and its components among other are strong antioxidant and free radical scavengers. Flavonoids and phenolic acids are major classes of poliphenolic substances which may act as potent antioxidant. Numerous researches showed that propolis exhibits many healing properties such immunoprotective and hepatoprotective activities, but also anti-proliferative ones. The aim of this study was to evaluate the protective effects of propolis against toxicity sodium fluoride in vitro. The ethanol extract of propolis (EEP) in dimethyl sulfoxide was used for the research. Ethanol from the extraction of propolis was removed by vaporization under vacuum. The cytotoxicity was evaluated by means of the MTT and LDH assays. The study was conducted using the WI-38 lung fibroblasts. The protective effect of EEP from Kamianna at concentrations of 50 and 100 μg/ml after a 24, 48 and 72 h incubation was observed in all examined concentration of sodium fluoride in medium. It depended on time, too. The increase of protective effect on fibroblast cell line was higher after administration of EEP with of 100 μg/ml vs. 50 μg/ml. The doses of propolis which we served demonstrated better protective effect in presence lower concentrations of fluoride sodium. The results of the present study revealed that administration of propolis decrease toxicity sodium fluoride in fibroblast culture.
