Summary
Discovered in XVI-century in Peru, Passiflora incarnata is a traditional herb drug with an unusual therapeutic potential and a long history of use. For hundreds of years it was traditionally used to treat neuralgic pain, painful menstruation, menopause, insomnia, anxiety, hyperactivity and also for the relief of mild symptoms of mental stress. Experimental studies have confirmed anxiolytic, sedative and anticonvulsant properties of this plant. Clinical trials have concerned on use of Passionflower in patients suffering from insomnia and generalized anxiety disorder. New reports about positive influence in addiction treatment by alleviating withdrawal syndrome (caused by nicotine, alcohol, benzodiazepines and cannabinoids) and in treatment of ADHD show still unused therapeutic potential of Passionflower. Active compounds still require identification, the mechanism of action remains unclear and it is necessary to develop an appropriate method of preparing the extract. In conclusion there is a great need for carrying out more experimental and clinical trials to prove the effectiveness of the Passiflora incarnata. That may allow to use this plant in new therapeutic indications in the future.
