Summary
Lycium barbarum is species belonging to the family Solanaceae that grows especially in China. Goji berries that are Lycium barbarum fruits contain many valuable components, from which polysaccharide complex is responsible for numerous health benefits. Lycium barbarum polysaccharides complex is a group of water-soluble glycoconjugates. Its content in dried fruits is about 5-8%. Its composition is based on monosaccharides (rhamnose, arabinose, xylose, mannose and glucose), galacturonic acid and 18 amino acids. The results of numerous scientific studies suggest anticancer and immunostimulatory activity of the polysaccharide complex of Goji berries. Moreover, it was observed its effect on carbohydrate metabolism, i.a. lowering blood glucose level and reducing insulin resistance. As an important health-promoting function it was also observed an influence on the decrease cholesterol and triglicerides levels in blood. Polysaccharide complex also has a high antioxidant capacity. Goji berries are widely used as an important element of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
