Summary
Introduction. Studies have shown that there is a possible correlation between periodontitis and cardiovascular disorders. Awareness of this fact should be a crucial component of oral health prophylaxis among patients and their doctors.
Aim. Evaluation of the knowledge and awareness about impact of periodontitis on cardiovascular diseases among patients and doctors.
Material and methods. A questionnaires of 16 questions for patients and 8 questions for doctors were created and conducted among 160 patients and 70 doctors in the Department of Internal Medicine, Hypertension and Angiology, I Department of Cardiology and Department of Internal Medicine and Cardiology, MUW.
Results. 54.38% of respondents didn’t know that periodontal disease may be a risk factor of cardiovascular disease, 76.25% of patients have never been told by their doctors about this fact. 98.57% of physicians are aware of this relation. However, 38.57% of them don’t tell about it to their patients and 42.86% don’t refer them to GDP. 80.16% of patients would visit their GDP more often and 85.22% would take greater care of oral hygiene, if they were well informed.
Conclusions. Knowledge and awareness of patients is insufficient and physicians don’t inform them efficiently. Doctors should pay more attention to improve patients’ education.
