Summary
Diosmin is a flavonoid in the form of glycoside that can be isolated from various plant or derived by chemical modification from hesperidin. For over 40 years diosmin has been used as a phlebotonic agent. Diosmin is used in chronic venous insufficiency and this indication is well-documented in many clinical trials. The second well-documented indication is internal and external hemorrhoids. The aim of this review is to present the results of clinical trials described in the world-wide literature related to diosmin and its usage in hemorrhoidal disease. Diosmin is an effective agent in patients with hemorrhoids I and II degree according to many clinical studies. Additionally, researchers showed that the administration of diosmin is safe and side-effects may occur very rarely, mainly as gastrointestinal symptoms which resolved after discontinuation of administration of diosmin and did not require medical intervention. In toxicological studies no mutagenic, embryotoxic or reproductive toxicity was showed. It can be concluded that diosmin when used in standard doses (twice daily 500 mg) is safe medicinal product of proven efficacy in the treatment of venous insufficiency and hemorrhoids.
