Summary
Living with a child suffering from a severe chronic disease such as galactosemia, cystic fibrosis or cancer causes an increased tension for all family members. Each family, as the environmental context in which a child patient lives, is a system of emotional ties. As a result none of family members can be analyzed in isolation from the others. The experience of a life-threatening illness is a challenge for the balance of the entire family system. Moreover, it is a difficult experience for all family members. The scientific works, which describe families’ salutations with children with chronic diseases or somehow disabled, usually concern a child itself or its parents. However, the child’s difficulties affect all family members. Because of that we should also pay attention to the situation of healthy sibling of chronically ill children. They need emotional support and assistance in adapting to the new situation. Care for children who are in that situation is not expensive or difficult, and provides long-lasting benefits for all family members.
