Summary
Introduction. Tracheotomy is one way to maintain airway patency. The primary indication for tracheotomy in children is getting the patency of the airway. Situations in which we perform tracheotomy are subject to a variety of causes and change over the years.
Aim. The aim of the study was to analyze the indications for tracheotomy in children treated in the Department of Pediatric Otolaryngology, Medical University of Warsaw.
Material and methods. We analyzed 124 children who underwent tracheotomy. It was found that in 91 children reason for tracheotomy were changes in the larynx after prolonged intubation, in 13 cases diagnosed with bilateral vocal cord paralysis, in 10 children indication for tracheotomy was to secure the airway in chronic diseases in 6 children performed a tracheotomy because of hemangioma of the larynx, 4 patients diagnosed with congenital subglottic stenosis.
Results. Indications for tracheostomy change. Currently, the predominant indication are changes after intubation in the larynx resulting from prolonged intubation. A major indication for tracheotomy is bilatarel vocal cords paralysis. We are seeing an increase in the amount of pediatric indications for tracheotomy in children with severe chronic diseases. Hemangiomas of the larynx can be treated pharmacologicall, and only a small group of patients require tracheotomy.
