Summary
Introduction. There are few reports describing the microbiological profile of patients with pilonidal cyst. In the published studies, the authors emphasize the advantage of anaerobic bacteria vs. aerobic in the development of inflammation of the pilonidal cyst. Most publications describe microbiology of the abscess, neither the uncomplicated disease.
Aim. The study attempts to assess the bacterial profile of patients with uncomplicated pilonidal cyst.
Material and methods. The material consisted of 15 patients treated in 2013-2014. The inclusion criterion: discharge from the cyst. Exclusion criterion: the presence of an abscess requiring immediate surgery. The smear from the cyst has been taken. The results were asses for the presence of bacteria which are saprophytic flora of the skin in the sacrococcygeal area and the pathogenic bacteria.
Results. Positive results were obtained in 14 cases (93%), in one case bacterial culture wasn’t found. Isolated aerobic culture were in 8 (53%). Isolated anaerobic culture were obtained in 2 cases (13%). Mixed flora was found in 4 cases (26%).
Conclusions. Microbiological spectrum of the bacteria isolated from material taken from patients with uncomplicated disease corresponds to the profile of saprophytic microbial flora of the skin and gastrointestinal tract. For uncomplicated pilonidal cyst aerobic bacteria are predominant in contrast to patients with pilonidal abscess, in which anaerobic bacteria are predominate.
