Summary
One in ten children coming into the world is born prematurely – according to the results from the World Health Organization. Infants born prematurely with extremely low birth weight is one of the most serious problems in perinatology and is a major cause of perinatal mortality. In comparison to healthy newborns, premature infants look different, behave differently and have a number of developmental disorders that cause hospitalization and multiple treatments.
The goal of the wider therapeutic procedure is not only the survival of immature infants, but also to enable them a proper development and good quality of life.
Physiotherapy is a recognized method of conduct at all stages of neurodevelopmental therapy of children. The NDT-Bobath method is one of the leading methods in physiotherapy. Scientific studies confirm the effectiveness of NDT-Bobath and the desirability of its use in the treatment of children born prematurely. Knowledge of contemporary rehabilitation allows for minimizing the effects of neuro-muscular immaturity and prevention of irregularities in motor development. Therapeutic activities have a major impact on improving the quality of life for children born prematurely.
The article discusses factors influencing the effectiveness of rehabilitation using NDT-Bobath, such as: gestational age, birth weight, respiratory failure, blurred vision, hearing loss and neurological disorders.
An evaluation was made and the results show that rehabilitation NDT-Bobath method depends on the time of commencement. The effectiveness of rehabilitation depends on the frequency and intensity of exercises.
It has been found that the tasks of physiotherapist and the parents’ role has a huge impact in future care for rehabilitation of the child.
NDT-Bobath method has been used around the world for many years. Its practices are widely accepted and do not cause controversy.
