Summary
Introduction. Nutrition of children in the first three years of their life and particularly in post-infant period is of paramount importance to development of correct nutrition habits.
Aim. The purpose of the paper is to research the knowledge of parents with regard to proper child nutrition up to the age of 3, with particular attention paid to the age bracket between the first and the third year of life.
Material and methods. The research was carried out among 216 parents of children up to the age of 3. A proprietary anonymous questionnaire was applied. The participation in the research was voluntary. The research was conducted among the parents of children attending kindergartens and those hospitalised at the Paediatric Hospital in Bielsko-Biała.
Results. The parents who took part in the research were better aware of child nutrition in the first year of life than as referred to nutrition in the age bracket of 1-3 years of age. In the 1-3 age bracket parents were not following any standards. The daily menu of small children had not always covered for all basic products. More than a half of the respondents (52.8%) had not served wholemeal bread to their children at all, whereas fish consumption had generally been low – 72.0% of respondents served fish to their children only once a week. 90.0% of parents give sweets to their children, including half of them making it several times a week. Parents supplement the children’s diet with various vitamins (e.g. Vibovit, Multisanostol, Cebion) but only 11 respondents (7.9%) mentioned that their child had been given vitamin D3. The beverages preferred by parents had been fruit juices – served by 85.5% of the respondents.
Conclusions. Infant feeding, including natural feeding, is not much different from the binding nutrition standards for that age group. Owing to the determined serious irregularities in young children nutrition, the developed nutrition standards should be propagated among the parents of children in the age bracket of 1-3 years of age. General practitioners should pay attention to vitamin D supplementation in small children.
