Summary
Bacopa monnieri L. Pennell (Brahmi) a species belonging to Scrophulariaceae family is basic and one of the most important plants from Ayurveda (traditional Indian) system. B. monnieri has been used in India for 5000 years to treat epilepsy, insomnia, and as a sedative. It can be found in wet areas, especially in South India. The most important active compounds of this plant are triterpene saponins called bacosides, alkaloids such as bramina and herpestine, flavonoids and steroid compounds. Their main action is to increase blood flow in the brain, improving concentration, they also have antidepressant, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial effect and they are also used as a support in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases). The aqueous extract of B. monnieri inhibits proliferation of cancer cells. B. monnieri extracts reduces the toxicity of morphine and phenytoin. This plant is known to be adaptogenic plant, ie. those that help the body to adapt to adverse environmental conditions having a normalizing effect on the human organism, but not stimulaiting, or blocking its normal function, and also acts as tonicum.
