Summary
This paper presents live and work of Szymon Starkiewicz – polish medical doctor, pediatrician, who devoted his life to treating sick children. This man sensitive to the misfortunes of others, was social activist and freemason. Inspired by the writing of Stefan Żeromski, all his adult life dedicated design and development of sanatorium for children „Hill”. It is also a tale of the times between the first and second world war. Shows the horrors of the German occupation and the plight of people Polish and Jewish. Based on the few surviving documents has shown his membership in the Polish Free masonry. We can trace his attitude in difficult situations. Article also shows various aspects of the new post-war reality in which they had to operate the spa for childrenin the new political realities. First of all, it is the story of life eminent man who sacrificed himself for the treatment of children from poor working-class families. Built from scratch sanatorium was proof that the efforts and work Dr. Starkiewicz was the inspiration for generations of Polish pediatricians to strenuous effort for sick children.
