The article reviews literature of the effect of gabapentin on chronic idiopathic cough. The reports reveal that the treatment of chronic idiopathic cough with gabapentin is both effective and well tolerated. Similarities between central reflex sensitisation in refractory chronic cough and neuropathic pain suggest that neuromodulators such as gabapentin might be effective for refractory chronic cough. Further randomized, placebo controlled studies are warranted to confirm these findings and more research is needed to unravel the mechanisms by which gabapentin improves cough.
