Summary
Introduction. To establish the habit of physical activity in preschool children, it is indispensable to take into account numerous factors which have influence on physical activity level such as motor skills and sports equipment possessed by the children and their parents’ attitude towards physical activity.
Aim. The aim of this study was to investigate motor skills and sports equipment in preschool children from Mazowsze, as well as to analyse parents’ attitude towards physical activity.
Material and methods. The studied population comprised 131 children aged 3 to 7 years, who lived in the Mazowsze region and attended preschools in Kadzidło, Ostrołęka and Warszawa. The studied preschoolers’ parents filled in questionnaires on their children’s motor skills, involvement of the family and other people in teaching these skills, sports equipment owned by the children and parents’ attitude towards physical activity. Statistical analysis was performed by means of the IBM SPSS Statistics 21. The studied population was divided according to gender.
Results. Statistically significant differences were observed between girls and boys in their ability to skate, swim and skip a rope, as well as between the percentages of girls and boys who owning a skipping rope, skateboard, hula hoop, tennis racket and other sports equipment. Statistically significant differences were also observed between the percentages of girls’ fathers and boys’ fathers who played tennis. Statistically significant correlation coefficients were observed between owning sports equipment and motor skills which require using this equipment.
Conclusions. In comparison to the previously studied children from various regions of Poland, the studied preschoolers were characterised by average motor skills. Our study shows the need to educate preschool staff about how to teach children motor skills and about its importance. It is also indispensable to emphasise these issues in the university curricula, as well as to work out guidebooks for parents and programmes aimed at increasing physical activity.
