Summary
Introduction. Currently used methods of radiological imaging and computerized functional tests do not fully address the problem of diagnosis and treatment of the brain atrophy. Brain atrophy affects elderly patients. A typical symptom of aging is diffusecortical and subcortical atrophy resulting from progressive loss of physiological of nerve cells. Cerebral atrophy coexists of ten with a significant enlargement of the ventricular system.
Aim. The aim of the study was to evaluate the usefulness of intracranial volumetric parameters for the diagnosis and monitoring processes of developing dementia.
Material and methods. The CT images were assessed and the CSF volumes of intracranial subarachnoid space, skull base casters, and ventricular system were calculated in the group of 26 brain atrophy patients. The volumetric measurements has been performed by means of the VisNow proprietary software.
Results. In the group of brain atrophy patients the average volume of CSF contained in subarachnoid and skull base casters significantly differs from the volume contained in the ventricular system (p < 0.01). The volume of intra cranial CSF in atrophy patients differs from the norm.
Conclusions. Implementation of the VisNow volumetric assessment method in clinical practice indicate that it may been extremely useful tool in the differential diagnosis of selected pathological conditions of the CNS. The method seems to be promising for monitoring in of the progression of dementia process and evaluate the results of the treatment.
