Summary
Children with diabetes type 1 need a specific didactic attitude. When planning diabetes education programmes, proper methods, techniques and teaching forms should be chosen. Such programmes should consider individual needs and abilities depending on: age, education level, medical problems, type of insulin therapy used, and complications. The programme should also include parents and guardians. The education should be based on international recommendations enriched with aspects specific for each country. It is recommended to induce educational programmes where the effectiveness is confirmed by research. In the paper an overview of children’s therapeutic education in diabetes was conducted. The advantages of such education were discussed and stress was put on the barriers concerning the development of this type of education. Focus was on international and polish guidelines concerning the functioning of interdisciplinary teams, organisation of education environment, selection of teaching materials and problems with efficient assessment of educational diabetic programmes.
