Summary
Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common endocrine diseases in humans, including childhood and adolescence. Fifty percent of pediatric diabetes mellitus cases begin before 14 years of age. Diabetes as a metabolic disease is a condition of total or relative insulin deficiency, which is characterized by hyperglycemia due to impaired insulin secretion or action, or a combination of both these situations. Symptoms of diabetes like, weight loss, are generally well known. However diagnosis of diabetes mellitus type 1 is still a problem for general practitioners, even though the basic symptoms are well described. The author presents cases where the glucose measurement can effectively improve early recognition of disease. Shortness of breath, weight loss, constipation and vomiting – are not connected with symptoms of diabetes. Measurement of glucose level in majority of cases is necessary and essential for the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus type 1.
