Summary
Otitis media with effusion is described as a presence of nonpurulent effusion of the middle ear behind an intact tympanic membrane without general and local signs and symptoms of acute inflammation. It is considered to be the most common reason of hearing loss in children population. The highest prevalence is found between first and seventh year of life. It usually coexists with dysfunction of Eustachian tube due to hypertrophy of Waldeyer’s ring or occurs as a sequel of acute otitis media. Most cases of effusion resolve spontaneously and remain asymptomatic. The diagnosis should be confirmed by otoscopy with additional tympanometry documenting type B tympanogram. The management includes watchful-waiting with conservative treatment. Persistent and accelerating hearing loss, reccurence of the disease and additional risk factors as developmental and speech delay are indications for surgical intervention: tympanopunction or ventilation tube insertion. In case of hypertrophy of lymphoid tissue the adenotomy or tonsillotomy should be performed.
