Summary
Introduction. Scabies is a common infectious skin disease. It is transmitted by direct skin-to-skin contact or through items. The risk of infection is particularly high among people who work for health service. Therefore, it is essential for them to have adequate knowledge about scabies. The main aim of the study was assessment of knowledge about scabies among people connected with health service.
Materials and methods. The research based on anonymous self-made survey among 310 workers and students of University Clinical Centre in Gdańsk and Medical University of Gdańsk. Results have been analysed in spreadsheet MS-Excel 2010.
Results. In analysed group 84% of doctors, 72% of nurses and 29% of students have come across with S.scabiei infection. 3% of doctors, 13% of nurses, 5% of students have been infected in the past. In questions related to symptoms, transmission of infection, typical pathological changes and treatment of scabies correct answers were chosen by 58% doctors, 52% nurses and 37% students. 89% of doctors, 85% of nurses and 76% of students think that infection is related to personal hygiene. 85% of students, 79% of nurses and 73% of doctors think, that this disease affects not only people with lower socio-economic status. Over 80% of respondents rightly think that members of patient’s family should also be treated. 49% of doctors, 56% of nurses and 64% of students consider scabies as the embarrassing disease.
Conculsions. Due to insufficient knowledge about scabies among people affiliated with health service it is very important to promote knowledge about this skin disease.
