Summary
Introduction. The published studies have reported low level of physical activity in preschool children and the authors concluded that there is a need to work out programmes aimed at increasing children’s physical activity which would also include education of their parents. To work out such programmes, it is indispensable to recognise the factors which stimulate physical activity in preschoolers. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate motor skills and sports equipment in preschool children from Darłowo, as well as to analyse parents’ attitude towards physical activity.
Material and methods. Parents of 100 children who attended preschools in Darłowo filled in questionnaires on their children’s motor skills, involvement of the family and other people in teaching these skills, sports equipment owned by the children and parents’ attitude towards physical activity. Statistical analysis was carried out by means of the IBM SPSS Statistics 21.
Results. Statistically significant differences were observed between girls and boys in their ability to ride a bicycle and skip a rope, as well as owning a skipping rope. Among girls, boys and in the whole population, high correlation coefficients were observed between owning skates and the ability to skate. In girls and in the whole population, high correlation coefficients were observed between owning rollerblades and the ability to rollerblade. There were also statistically significant differences in mothers’ answers to the question on undertaking other kinds of physical activity.
Conclusions. The studied children’s motor skills were similar to the motor skills of their peers from other regions of Poland. The little involvement of the preschool staff in teaching the children motor skills shows the need to organise a training programme on how to teach the preschoolers motor skills and the need to implement these issues in the academic curriculum.
