Summary
Introduction. Taking into account the importance of physical activity to human health, it is essential to monitor preschoolers’ physical activity as well as their favourite ways of spending leisure time. The aim of this study was to analyse ordinary and additional physical activity in preschool children from Darłowo and to investigate their favourite ways of spending leisure time.
Material and methods. Parents of 100 3-6-year-old children who attended preschools in Darłowo filled in questionnaires on general information about their children, the children’s ordinary and additional physical activity, and their favourite ways of spending leisure time. Statistical analysis was carried out by means of the IBM SPSS Statistics 21. The studied population was divided according to gender.
Results. Statistically significant differences were observed between girls and boys in their parents’ opinion on the children’s body weight and health status; attending dance and karate classes, and riding a bicycle; playing with a ball as a favourite way of spending leisure time during beautiful weather; and drawing/painting, playing with dolls and outdoor games involving physical exercise as favourite ways of spending leisure time during rainy weather.
Conclusions. Due to the studied preschoolers’ low physical activity, it is necessary to educate preschoolers’ parents, preschool staff and local authorities about the importance of physical activity, the kinds of indoor and outdoor exercises, the harmful effects of spending long hours in front of a television or a computer, popularising among the children the habit of spending their leisure time outdoors from the early childhood and avoiding passing on to children stereotypical beliefs about which games are suitable for girls and boys.
