Summary
Introduction. Alcoholism among children and adolescents seems to be a social problem.
Aim. The aim of this study was to analyze the alcohol intoxication in children and adolescents based on hospitalizations in the University Children’s Hospital (USD) in Krakow.
Material and methods. In the years 2000-2012 due to alcohol abuse 234 patients were hospitalized in USD. Only in two cases of the youngest children poisoning was a result of mistaken consumption alcohol instead of non-alcoholic fluids.
Results. 58% of drunk children were in junior high school and high school (15-16 years), but there were also 11% of the younger children in the age of 10-14 years. Most intoxicated children (50) were hospitalized in 2010. In subsequent years, there was a slight decrease in the number of hospitalizations due to alcoholic abuse (2011 – 41 children, 2012 – 46 children), but this is accompanied by an increase in the percentage of drunk girls. In 2012, alcohol poisoned girls represented 52% of all admitted children because of alcohol intoxication. The highest concentration of alcohol in hospitalized patients was found in 16-year-old boy (4.08‰) and 15-year-old girl 3.71‰.
Conclusions. We conclude that adolescents and even children intentionally consume the alcohol, what results in severe alcoholic intoxication. An increasing number of girls consuming alcohol, which equals the number of boys is a severe social problem.
