Polifenole w profilaktyce chorób cywilizacyjnych

Summary
Scientific progress in the last few years brought a new knowledge about the links between diet and human health. Except for the valuable nutrients, food contains also very significant non-nutritive substances which could play an important role in prophylaxis of many civilization diseases. Biological activity of natural plant components allows us to speculate on comprehensive perspectives of their use not only as herbs known from traditional folk medicine but also in the form of drugs used in the treatment of various diseases. Polyphenols are an example of such active plant components. They are secondary plant metabolites known for many properties such as: anticoagulant, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antiviral and seal blood vessels. Their chemical structure is similar to endogen hormone. Many research showed that they could have a positive effect on human health. In this article, the authors attempted to determine the use of polyphenols in the prevention of lifestyle diseases.
