Summary
The eyebright herb is obtained from two species: Euphrasia officinalis L. and E. rostkoviana Hayne, collected only from natural habitats. The most important compounds detected so far are: flavonoids, iridoids, mainly aucubin and phenolic acids. In folk medicine the herb is used in eye diseases and sometimes in skin irritations. Studies on the biological activity of eyebright herb are scarce so far and mainly focused on positive effects of homeopathic eye drops in healing eye inflammation. The data indicate no adverse effects associated with the use of topical formulations containing eyebright
