Summary
The leaves and the whole herb of Indian Pennywort (Centella asiatica (L). Urban), (often mentioned in combination with the related marsh pennywort Hydrocotyle vulgaris L.) are used in Ajurveda medicine for thousands of years for improving memory and as remedium for treatment of central nervous system diseases, vasculo-cardiac disorders, chronic gastric ulcers, dermatopathies, hard healing wounds, lepra, and in edema with increased capillary filtration. The main components of this longevity herb, responsible for above activity, are the triterpenoids, mainly asiatic and madecassic acids and their sugar esters (pseudosaponins), asiaticoside and madecassoside. The objective of this article was to demonstrate some last investigations of the healing properties of Centella asiatica herb and of its active pseudosaponins, especially asiaticoside and madecassoside, mainly related to their action for some connective tissue and mental disorders.
