Summary
The aim of dentistry is to maintain the patient’s own teeth as long as possible. Dentists often face with this problem in their work. Keeping the tooth and accepting the risk of its loss is acceptable when the tooth isn’t heavily damaged, has a high strategic value (especially in patients with contraindications to implant), is in a full arch and the structure of the gum is healthy. The choice: to treat or to remove the tooth and replace it with an implant is often controversial. The purpose of both, the endodontic treatment and implant placement is to restore the function and aesthetics. However, both types of therapy differ significantly. The endodontic treatment keeps the existing tooth, the implant placement is a reconstruction of its absence. In the esthetic zone implant placement is often a challenge carrying a risk because of the presence of many factors that can affect the final result. The development of implantology and its high survival rate caused that implants have become good and an acceptable solution for the reconstruction of the lost tooth. Dentists often make the decision to treat or remove questionable tooth in their practice. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the risk factors that should be considered when deciding whether a tooth with uncertain prognosis should be treated and left, or rather removed and possibly replaced with an implant.
