Summary
Introduction. Transitional losses of consciousness caused by reducing of the perfusion of the brain are a frequent medical problem which the doctors of different specialities encounter, especially a staff of the accident and emergency ward.
Aim. Evaluation of the percentage of medical interventions on A&E department caused by transitional losses of consciousness.
Material and methods. Information was taken from analysis of the book of A&E department of the district hospital in Janów Lubelski in the period from 1 January 2004 to 31 December 2010.
Results. 225 cases of transitional losses of consciousness were recorded in the examined seven-year period towards 3201 total of admitted patients. The lowest percentage of medical interventions due to syncope was reported in 2004, and the largest in 2009.
Conclusions. Transitional losses of consciousness constitutes one of main elements of the work of doctors of A&E department and general practicioner. Transitional loss of consciousness can be symptoms of serious illness or injury. These incidents should not be underestimated.
