Summary
The relationship between oral hygiene, denture hygiene and general health is curently a common topic of research and discussion. It has been proven that chronic inflammation of the biofilm cousing by bacterial and Candida infections can influence and can make weaken the general health. The microbiology of denture plaque is directly and indirectly affected by the disease, such as diabetes, COPD, and aspiration pneumonia, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and others. In elderly patients living in nursing homes or hospitalized, the colonizations of plaque and denture plate by respiratory pathogens is frequent. Neglect of oral hygiene in this group of patients often results from lack of dental prevention and knowledge of dental and prosthesis hygiene care. Reduction and control of bacterial-fungal biofilm of denture plaque reduces the risk of complications of systemic disease.
