Zachowania żywieniowe młodzieży leczonej ortodontycznie

Summary
Introduction: Eating habits, on which is a significant impact has health education, are modeled during a whole life under the influence of different patterns. Proper nutrition of youth, during their intensive growth and maturation, is of particular importance. Dietary recommendations apply to both: healthy people and patients with chronic diseases. There is little information about patients’ during their orthodontic treatment.
Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the eating habits of patients before and during orthodontic treatment with braces.
Material and methods: The study included 144 orthodontic clinic’s patients (age 13-18 years of age). The research tool was a proprietary questionnaire evaluating eating behavior during orthodontic treatment.
Results: The general observation was the fact that patients treated with fixed braces do not have proper eating habits, before and during orthodontic treatment. During orthodontic treatment the number of consumed meals did not change significantly. However the pain experienced after visiting orthodontist, limited the number of consumed meals (p < 0.0001). During the treatment habit of eating unhealthy snacks did not significantly change.
Conclusions: Intensification of nutrition education is necessary among young people treated with braces in order to prevention of the oral cavity diseases and the incidence of diet-related diseases.
