Summary
Type 1 diabetes despite treatment with insulin is still a difficult-to-treat disease, which causes many complications. Due to increasing incidence diabetes was considered to be a disease of civilization. Diabetes type 1 is a metabolic disease caused by chronic immune attack on the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. In the search for new treatments for the disease attention was paid to its autoimmune pathogenesis and possibility of the treatment by destroying autoreactive clones and then regeneration of new pancreas cells. Stem cells (SCs) with their ability to regenerate and differentiate into various organs may be the future of diabetes treatment. SCs can restore peripheral tolerance to pancreatic β-cells by converting the immune response and inhibition of T lymphocytes. In addition, insulin-producing cells originating from SCs reduce hyperglycemia and insulin requirement. Currently, there are various possibilities of using SCs from different sources. This paper presents the possibility of using SCs in the treatment of type 1 diabetes.
