Summary
Introduction. Infertility becomes an increasing problem of developed societies. Assisted Reproduction Technology (ART) makes having children possible. As a result of ART, higher occurrence of multiple pregnancies (26% compared to 2% for the general population) and premature births (2-fold higher), probably cause the higher incidence of cerebral palsy. The presence of other pathologies (digestive, reproductive, imprinting-related) is still pending and needs investigation.
Aim. Assessment of the global data on the effectiveness of ART and the occurrence of pathology in children conceived by this method.
Materials and methods. Analysis of 1978-2012 years’ international data, determining the effectiveness of ART and their impact on the children health.
Results and conclusions. The effectiveness of ART increases. Intracytoplasmatic Sperm Injection results in pregnancy and deliveries – respectively 35.4% and 29% of cycles. Transferring several embryos enhances the chance of implantation and delivery rates. 53% of women decide to transfer 2 embryos. Cerebral palsy is significantly more often observed in ART children, which seems related to the prematurity and multiple pregnancy. Malformations of reproductive and gastrointestinal tract are also more common among ART children than in the general population. According to the analyzed data, the results of the impact of ART on the incidence of malformations are diversified. Even in similar populations some are contradictory. After adjusting maternal factors (age, smoking, causes of infertility, multiple pregnancies) it occurs that imprinting – related diseases, ocular and nervous system malformations have similar occurrence as in general population. The further research is necessary.
