Summary
Introduction. Alcohol consumption during pregnancy is associated with a risk of fetal alcohol syndrome baby. The only consideration in the prevention of this disease is abstinence during pregnancy.
Aim. Aim of research is to assess the awareness of young people about the risks of alcohol consumption during pregnancy.
Materials and methods. The survey was conducted by using a diagnostic survey questionnaire of students’ high school matriculation classes. Study group consisted of 112 persons, including 53 women and 59 males.
Results. The study showed that the respondents’ knowledge of the topic is insufficient. This may be due to the fact that only 13% of the respondents were informed by a gynecologist during the visit of the impact of alcohol on the fetus. Thus, interest in the subject of health promotion and harmfulness take risky sexual behavior is defined as inadequate. In most cases, the respondents knowledge of fetal alcohol syndrome derive from school (34%) and the Internet (32%). The vast majority of respondents (68%), advice and information on maternal and child health in the media is looking for.
Conclusions. Fetal alcohol syndrome subjects has so far not been sufficiently addressed, which is a prerequisite to intensify social campaigns treating the health and life of unborn children, in the context of fetal alcohol syndrome.
