Summary
Obesity due to the increasing prevalence, particularly among the citizens in developed but more often also in developing countries, is now a serious social, socio-economic problem and also a huge challenge for the modern medicine. Consequences of obesity are serious diseases such as type 2 diabetes or atherosclerosis. Up to date there are no fully effective, safe therapy and prevention strategies against obesity. An alternative for the synthetic drugs, that frequently have serious adverse and side effects, are several herbs and plant-derived substances that can be used in complementary therapy of obesity. In this paper we have summarized the herbal substances and their active metabolite, which can produce antyobesity effects via several mechanisms. One of interesting plant-derived substance that, according to current state of knowledge, may be considered as a safe and effective treatment is glucomannan – a fiber derived from the root of Amorphophallus konjac L. Results from animal and clinical studies show that addition of glucomannan to the diet can lower plasma glucose, total cholesterol and be helpful in reducing the body mass of patients. The paper summarize the available information which may be of value in the development of new, effective and safe forms of prevention and symptomatic treatment of obesity related disorders using glucomannan.
