Summary
Nutraceuticals are foods which combine nutritional value and pharmaceutical properties. These are intermediate products between traditional food and medicine. Polyphenolic compounds are very popular as nutraceuticals. Observations describing the effect of diet rich in polyphenols have encouraged research into the molecular mechanisms of antiplatelet activity of these compounds. In vitro studies have demonstrated that these compounds block the various pathways of platelet activation, mainly cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase activity. Both the results of basic research and epidemiological studies provide a basis to conclude that the preparations of plant origin exhibiting antiplatelet properties may become in the near future an important part of prevention of cardiovascular disease.
