Summary
Introduction: Saliva fulfills many functions in the body. The absence or reduced secretion results in the occurrence of adverse effects in the oral cavity. Dry mouth is one of the most annoying, frequently occurring side effect of systemic diseases and drugs use in their treatment.
Aim: Assess the impact of pharmacotherapy used in the treatment of cardiovascular disease and associated factors such as diabetes, substance abuse, or use of prosthetic restorations on the amount of saliva.
Material and methods: The study included a medical interview, questionnaire on salivary disorders, quantitative assessment of salivary flow, the measurement of pH.
Results: In a survey, a significant proportion of patients reported dry mouth. A small number of patients paid attention to the occurrence of burning mouth symptom. The study of the quantitative measurement of salivary flow stimulated by chewing paraffin blocks shows that the problem of reduced saliva secretion affects more women than men. Coexistence of factors such as diabetes and use of prosthetic significantly affect the reduction in the amount of saliva. The use of stimulants does not influence the secretion of saliva.
Conclusions: Cardiovascular diseases and drug therapy affect the reduced secretion of saliva. Dry mouth can be a symptom of disease or response to pharmacologic therapies. Dentists should pay attention to the occurrence of cardiovascular disease in patients who have a problem with dry mouth.
