Summary
Surgical removal of lower third molars is one of the most frequently performed procedures in the oral surgery. Inevitably, some of those surgical interventions is associated with the risk of inferior alveolar nerve injury. Coronectomy, the method consist in cutting off the crown of the tooth and leaving the roots “in situ”, has been proposed as an alternative to total tooth extraction in cases of increased risk of damaging the inferior alveolar nerve. The study presents information about the risk of alveolar nerve injury during the procedure of surgical removal of lower third molars, diagnostic radiology in qualifying patients for the intentional removal of crown procedure, coronectomy technique and the associated risk of postoperative complications (such as root migration, consequential infections). According to the authors intentional removal of lower third molars crowns procedure can be used as an alternative to total tooth extraction only in cases of very high risk of damaging the inferior alveolar nerve, defined on the basis of tomographic image.
