Summary
Introduction. Dental decay is a highly dynamic social disease, which predominantly affects young people.
Aim: The aim of the study was to evaluate the state of dentition in 15-and 18-year-old adolescents. The schools were situated in the Podkarpackie Province.
Material and metods: The examination was carried out in two residential environments: in the big city Rzeszów and the small town Nisko. The clinical examination of the oral cavity included 270 subjects. Their state of dentition was evaluated on the basis of caries frequency, as well as the DMF index. The treatment index (TI) was also determined.
Results: On the basis of the conducted studies, the following observations have been made: There is high caries frequency in all the examined subjects in both analysed places of living, the treatment index was slightly higher in a big city, for both age groups, compared to a small town. The mean DMF index for 15-year-olds was 6.45 in Rzeszów and 6.65 in Nisko, and the mean DMF index for 18-year-olds was 9.45 in Rzeszów and 9.33 in Nisko. The mean TI for 15-year-olds was 0.54 in Rzeszów and 0.41 in Nisko, and the mean TI for 18-year-olds was 0.59 in Rzeszów and 0.49 in Nisko.
Conclusions: High values of decay frequency and low values of the treatment index in all the study groups of adolescents indicate the necessity to intensify preventive and therapeutic measures.
