Świadomość kobiet w ciąży na temat profilaktyki zaburzeń narządu żucia

Summary
Introduction: About 80% of disorders in stomatognathic system are acquired. Parents’ awareness concerning methods of prophylaxis and ways of everyday care is essential in prevention of malocclusion and contributes to proper development of stomatognathic system.
Aim: The main aim of this research was to evaluate the awareness of prophylaxis of disorders in stomatognathic system among pregnant women. In addition, authors analysed factors that may influence this awareness.
Material and methods: A survey was conducted among 61 women, hospitalized in 1st Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Warsaw Medical University. A questionnaire comprised 12 questions, concerning dysfunctions, parafunctions, caries and oral hygiene. SPSS Statistics was used for statistical analysis of answers.
Results: Average number of correct answers for 12 questions was 7.64 (standard deviation 1.871). There was no correlation between age, number of previous pregnancies, frequency of dental check-ups and visit at dental surgery during present pregnancy and the level of awareness concerning prophylaxis of defects in stomatognathic system. 61% of women declared that pediatrician should give them information about prophylaxis of disorders in stomatognathic system.
Conclusion: 1. Pregnant women are not satisfyingly aware of risk factors and principles of orthodontic prophylaxis. 2. Dentists should be more meticulous while educating their patients, because they are the main source of knowledge about prophylaxis of disorders in stomatognathic system for respondents. 3. Due to the fact, that the majority of respondents indicated a pediatrician as a person who should give information about orthodontic prophylaxis, the cooperation between orthodontists and paediatricians is desirable.
