Summary
Increasing number of reports concerning the contribution of cytokines in the process of tumors formation and development has been observed last years. Their role as the factors directly influencing not only growth and proliferation of cancer cells, but also as the factors modulating their apoptosis or regulating neoangiogenesis process is demonstrated. The cytokines of a possible significance in that range include interleukin 17 family (IL-17) containing the group of IL-17A-F ligands and IL-17RA-E receptors. Proteins from this family, due to their multidirectional activity, participate both in the processes regulating tissues homeostasis, but also play a role in various states of pathology, also in neoplasmic process. The data available do not allow an unequivocal assessment of the role of IL-17 family proteins in the course of neoplasmic disease. They may thus exhibit both anticancer activity and those promoting development of neoplasmic process. This concerns a direct influence on cancer cells in a primary focus, influence on formation of secondary foci, and also modulation of mechanisms of cell anticancer response.
In the presented review paper we try to clarify, it seems, important role of members of IL-17 cytokines family in the course of neoplasmic disease.
