Summary
Helicobacter pylori is a Gram-negative bacterium. It is able to survive in the acidic environment of the stomach, where normally other bacteria die. The ability to colonize the stomach is due to the enzyme, urease, it produces in large quantities. Helicobacter pylori is a pathogen, because its presence in the stomach mucosa causes a chronic infection of the stomach mucosa, which, consequently, leads to stomach and duodenal ulcers or even to the stomach cancer eventually. The bacterium is the most widespread pathogen. The infection caused by Helicobacter pylori is extremely common and it concerns 50-60% of the human population. In highly developed countries the percentage of the infected people is much lower than in poor countries.
In Poland the rate reaches 58%. The infection is detected by invasive methods requiring endoscopy as well as non-invasive methods where the endoscopy is not needed. The treatment of the Helicobacter pylori infection is more and more effective and it is based on the variety of therapies including antibiotics and gastric acid suppressants.
