Summary
Phytochemical compounds have very strong antioxidant properties, and can interfere with the processes of carcinogenesis and the development of cancer. Consuming foods rich in phytochemicals seems to be actually a very good recommendation, not only in primary cancer prevention, but also in secondary cancer prevention, extremely important in reducing the risk of recurrence. Important thing is the awareness that none of the foods rich in phytochemicals is not a miracle drug in itself. For this reason it is necessary to modify and diverse diet in such a way as to contain the optimum amount of foods rich in various phytochemicals. The nutritional value of foods is assessed primarily on the basis of macro and micronutrients. However, without considering the assessment of phytochemicals that evaluation would not be complete. These compounds are found mainly in vegetables, fruits, and also in spices, beverages and selected legumes. The strongest anticancer potential have selected non-starchy vegetables; garlic and cruciferous vegetables; fruits such as blueberry, cranberry, blackberry, raspberry, strawberry, grapes, citrus; soy and soy products; turmeric and green Japanese tea.
