Summary
Mitochondria are multifunctional ogranella crucial for the proper cell homeostasis. State of chronic hyperglycaemia causes numerous changes in their structure and function, thus contributing to the formation of late complications associated with diabetes. The main reason of such failure are the processes of increased formation of advanced glycation end-products and reactive oxygen species. A diet rich in polyphenols, as well as prophylactic consumption of plant extracts, which are the source of these substances, may limit these adverse effects caused by diabetes or at least delay their emergence. Polyphenols can improve mitochondrial respiration and help in maintaining of the efficient production of ATP. Antioxidant properties of polyphenols and their ability to reduce formation of reactive oxygen species have protective effect on mitochondrial structures. Some polyphenols affect the regulation of gene expression and can enhance the mitochondrial biosynthesis. Polyphenolic extracts, in the form of dietary supplements, can help in a natural way in our combat with the growing epidemic of diabetes and prevent severe complications associated with this disease. It is possible that the use of such preparations could delay the emergence of late diabetic complications or even prevent the development of the disease complications.
