Summary
It is estimated that over 3 500 000 children were born worldwide as a result of the assisted reproductive technology (ART). It means that, in developed countries, 0.8 to 4.1% of children were conceived after ART. Since 1978, in vitro fertilization (IVF) has been used commonly. The new techniques of fertility treatment are introduced into clinical practice almost each year. The procedures of ART are quite invasive and concerns about long-term health of children conceived in vitro have led to start follow-up studies. General condition of most of children conceived with ART is reassuring. However, parents undergoing ART should be aware of all potential risks involved into ART. Prematurity and intrauterine growth retardation seem to cause most of the pathologies reported in ART children. Multiple pregnancies are the major risk factor of the above mentioned complications. Therefore, a single embryo transfer seems to be a procedure of choice in the modern ART allowing to decrease the risk of potential complications. Finally, concerns about long-term health of people conceived with ART still remain, and long-term follow up studies are strongly needed worldwide.
